Durable, attractive & inexpensive flooring

If you are looking for a durable, attractive, inexpensive flooring option- Epoxy may just be the choice for you! Epoxy flooring can take any dingy drab space to stunning in just a short amount of time. Epoxy floor is a protective coating that is applied on top of the existing flooring (in most cases). This can be one coat or many coats.

What is epoxy?

Epoxy flooring may not be something that you’ve heard of before but, in its simplest definition, it is a flooring surface that is made up of multiple layers of epoxy that is applied to the floor to a depth of at least two millimeters. The coating is based on epoxy resins and is usually multi component (requires mixing). The two main components are resins and hardeners. The resin and hardener is mixed together where they chemically react to form a rigid plastic material that is strong, resistant to degradation and that bonds extremely well to its substrate. Epoxy floors are so strong that they can be used in even the most demanding of industrial environments.

Epoxy flooring - Not just for hospital & warehouses anymore

Epoxy floors are so strong that they’re often used in heavy traffic areas such as industrial environments, hospitals, or sports facilities. However, recently we have seen a rising trend of installing epoxy floor in the home, from kitchens to bedrooms! Why? Epoxies create that glossy seamless finish that can make the living space of a home look very impressive. They are easily customizable (glitter, anyone?) and very durable.

Four benefits of epoxy flooring

  1. Durability – Epoxy floor provides your home (or whatever space!) with long-lasting durability. Unlike carpet and hardwood – there is no need to worry about water damage. It is resistant to chips and cracks as well, which is why it is often used in garages and industrial spaces.
  2. Cleanliness & hygiene – Epoxy creates a very smooth, easy to clean surface that is not available with concrete or tile. Household liquids often stain carpets and hardwoods, but with epoxy, stains are easily wiped up without any hassle!
  3. Waterproofing – Epoxy is a great waterproofing surface. Epoxy prevents liquid substances from penetrating the top layer into the existing flooring below, and also allows for easy cleanup.
  4. Beauty - Epoxy flooring creates an entirely different effect than any other type of flooring. Epoxy allows you to select from many patterns, colors and styles. You can create a style that resembles marble or granite, or any other unique color finish!

Choose your contractor with care!

Epoxy floors work differently than most other flooring options. The actual fabrication of the flooring takes place during installation, not offsite like carpet or tile. This means that your installer needs to ensure that they account for dust, temperature, humidity, and quality – just to name a few! You will want to ensure that you have a professional on hand to complete the job, or you will end up with a finished product with seams and cracks.

Epoxy floor upkeep

A little common sense goes a long way when it comes to the upkeep of epoxy floors. This type of flooring can be quite slippery when wet. If you are installing it in a kitchen or bathroom you will want to add materials to ensure that it is non-slip. You’ll want put felt pads under furniture and rugs to prevent slipping and sliding. Notice a scratch or scuff? A magic eraser works wonders for any marks.
